CO2 Absorption by Tree Growth
Growing trees absorb the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) and convert it into oxygen (O2). During travel the burning of fossil fuels (such as oil, petrol and kerosene) produces gases that have been "locked up" for millions of years, which promote the greenhouse effect. By planting trees, CO2 is reabsorbed making the cycle complete. We have developed a calculation method that has been tested by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). The calculation method has been kept as simple as possible to allow you to determine quickly what your own contribution should be.
You can see how many trees that we will plant with your contribution by using our Emissions Calculator or requesting an offset for your flight. In the coming years these trees will absorb your CO2 emissions. The projects are regularly checked to ensure that your CO2 emissions are actually being absorbed.
To administer the projects, Trees for Travel cooperates with expert organizations that have experience in the plantation of forests used to offset CO2 emissions. Only they are able to provide certificates of CO2 absorption. Certification institutes such as the Swiss SGS verify the projects to confirm the amount of absorbed CO2 and predict future absorption rates. In this way, we and our supporters are sure that we are getting what we pay for.
