Worldwide Forest Plantation
With your financial support, we plant new forest and regenerate existing ones that have been severely damaged by uncontrolled deforestation and we develop sustainable energy projects and energy efficiency projects. Over the years, the Trees for Travel has supported projects in Malaysia, Mali and the Netherlands. In 2008 we have begun a project in the Philippines. All the projects that we are involved in meet the requirements of sustainable forestry set by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC).
In practice this means:
- Planting of native trees species that are naturally suited to the local conditions.
- Involvement of the local population. The work is carried out by local experts in cooperation with local and regional organizations. The local population is employed for the plantation and management resulting in extra income.
- Sustainable forestry involving no utilization of artificial fertilizers or pesticides.
- A long life for the forest. The forest administrators must be able to guarantee that the forest will remain for at least 50 years. Therefore money from eg. tourism and forestry could be used. What is more, the forest provides work opportunities giving the local population further reason to preserve it.
- The forests are independently checked to ensure verification of CO2 absorption and sustainable forestry methods.
- All profits must be reinvested to expand the project thus increasing further CO2 absorption, promoting environmental recovery and improving social and economic conditions. For example, our project in Mali financed the purchase of water pumps and agricultural material for the local community.
