The future
By looking at the experiences and successes of the Koulikoro farmers’ union, more of these projects will be set up in Mali. According to Shell, 60 million litres of diesel is consumed in Mali on a monthly basis illustrating the enormous potential for biodiesel production from the Jatropha shrub, the numbers of which were previously a limiting factor.

The principle belief of all the project partners is the project’s sustainable development. The region must benefit in terms of ecological, economic and social development: these are the three keynotes.

The aim, therefore, is to build 20 factories by 2014 that will collectively produce 1 million litres of biodiesel per month.

The very same concept is obviously applicable in the neighbouring countries of Senegal, Burkina Faso and Niger.
